my first attempt at my home wind turbine

how cheap can you build a home wind turbine from ebay.co.uk dont put them near trees as this creates turbulence and get it as high as you can for extra power

if they are that bad you put a cage around the blades

I built my own Wind Turbine for UNDER $100 that currently provides free electricity for my 1700 square foot home using the simple plans at:

i have a 400 square foot house near the main i want to place a turbine or use some solar paneling to help with. it uses 6 kWh a day with no one in it. no a/c, no tv … nothing except a water heater and frig going. so the cost is roughly $50 a month just siting there. what on earth is worth buying and installing that would save any money and how much would it save over how long?

The first thing I would do is switch off the fridge
it would save power and why is the water heating when no one is there ?

Good on you. At least your trying to push forward.

how is the vibration and balance on that turbine, it looks much more stable than most home-made turbines I have seen.

  7. HomeWindTurbines7 says:

How many amps/watts are you getting with this home wind turbine? Looks like it’s holding up well for a home experiment turbine. What voltage are you charging to the battery bank on that home made system?

  8. windysolar1 says:

this has been redesigned and upgraded but is not working untill the current law changes in the UK

  9. windysolar1 says:

it was fine but I redesigned the mount and it will be back up later next year I hope.

No louder than the wind noise

    good job at the turbine

    @windysolar1

I have to agree with that comment. It is always like that. If they don’t want to make the changes, we have to ourselves. Nice work.

does winter weather affect it at all

  14. windysolar1 says:

In winter the turbine produces the highest amount of power output.seal it up and its fine in winter.

  15. WVliberty says:

@windysolar1 if your power goes out, what all can you run off of it

  16. windysolar1 says:

I use the turbine to only charge up my battery banks.
I use a Xantrex pro sine inverter to produce up to 1000w pf 230vac.

  17. WVliberty says:

@windysolar1 is it noticeable on your power bill

Like the video, My install of home rooftop wind turbines and solar panels is in my videos, Subscribe to my channel if you like, I’ll be posting more stuff showing my home wind turbine system. Thanks

  19. timmot123 says:

I have a couple of solar panels which give at best, 380W on a sunny summers day, a small wind turbine would be a great addition.
Good to know – anyone? who is thinking about solar or wind, it’s great, but remember that if is to be connected to a net connected system then the solar/wind supply can not be used as? a backup, by law if there is a power cut, the solar/wind has to instantly cut off the supply to the net !

  20. windysolar1 says:

    valid point
If you wire the mains circuits using dpdt switches like the video I posted you will be disconnected from the utility mains anyway so no problem.

  23. WindPowerKits says:

@timmot123 There are systems like the one on my roof that have all the automatic transfer switching built into the system, comes with the home wind turbine kit. The specification for the grid-tie is UL1741. In the US, an alternative energy system that is grid-tied must meet this standard to be legal.

Who am I ?

Erik

Hi, I’m Erik Astrand and the man behind this site.

My story?
I am about to be 50 and all my life I have been interested in technical things. Not sure if the special interest for the wind, and how to use the wind, started when I as a 5 year old boy and got my first sail dinghy.

Anyway, wind power and to build my own wind generator was a dream for several years. I studied many websites and also bought many courses before I finally built my own windmill. This site is about that journey and you will also find some more general articles about wind power.

Enjoy! and check out the about me page to read more.
