Energy from the Wind – Wind Turbines

I am fascinated by those beautiful, effective and environmentally sound modern wind turbines. This is the Repower MM92, rated power: 2000kW, rotor diameter: 92.5m, hub height: 100m. See also the record breaking 6MW E-126 from ENERCON www.youtube.com

Utter nonsense. The load factors you quote are wrong (you just made them up) and National grid announced this week in a report that 33000MW of new wind power in the UK by 2020 would require another 4000MW of backup; not quite ‘matching fossil fuel generation’ is it?
Everything you say about wind power is negative, speculative and misleading. You are just another closed mind nimby.

I dont have a back yard, I ;live in the city. Wouldnt trusst the national grid as far as I could spit out a rat. After all they stand to make a lot of money from ROC commitments. My data comes form the REF study. The best load factor in the country is 54% and thats pretty abnormal. Golby of EON reckons it will need 100bn of backup. Im all for renewables if they are cost effective and reliable. Wind isnt.

    Time will tell…..

  4. acidtrashy says:

Time has told. Without massive subsidy, nobody would build them.

  5. apingos says:

no such thing as clean coal. talk about money down a rat hole

  6. acidtrashy says:

In terms of CCS I agree. But modern coal is 25% cleaner than old generation. thats an instant saving.

  8. acidtrashy says:

I agree in that landfil gas probably doesnt get much value for money but if that doesnt then wind certainly doesn’t. Besides the point though. the ROC is a totally absurb ripoff. But anyway, I dont want the whole of our countryside plastered with turbines.

Hey, check out my website at ScientificallyGreener(Dot) com and get all the new and improved Equipments to build or buy your own solar panels and wind energy turbine systems ScientificallyGreener(Dot) com is a website that sells the most modern environmental products available

  10. seebraham says:

its just as clean as the process of building these things. All the metal going into these windmills is heated over fossil fuel furnaces and fires. Just because the windmill itself isn’t spewing fumes doesn’t mean it is 100% clean. The fact is the ‘green’ fad should be ONLY called RENEWABLE. Same goes for almost all current green tech… imagine how much the environment has been damaged to build all these windmills. Look at all that metal.. it all came from destroying the earth.

Your opinion is clearly tainted by that Airbus pie your finger is in.

  12. acidtrashy says:

I was an opponent of wind long before then. In fact I first became aware of the scam while working for the UK’s biggest wind developer.

  13. kitfoxflyer says:

    Windfarms rock. Wind is free

  14. wikichris says:

I agree about subsidies but the fact a wind farm only generates 30% of it’s maximum theoretical output doesn’t render them useless.

Nothing can be manufactured with nothing !.
Go a the jungle & live there !.
But don’t “Poop” it will pollute air !.

  16. seebraham says:

And you are going to look really stupid when every square inch of the planet is covered in solar panels and windmills and we still don’t have enough energy.

  17. TehMauveAvenger says:

Ya, I suppose you’re right. Let’s just not try to fix the problem of fossil fuel use at all. Solar energy is a joke even though nearly all the high energy bonds formed within fossil fuels originated from solar energy. I apologize. Just what was I thinking?

  18. sisterbunny says:

    wind turbines = jetsons
    fossil fuels = flintstones

  19. acidtrashy says:

Yeah a WHOPPING 283mw tonight, the coldest spell for 50 years. FAIL.

  20. FarhanC99 says:

    Nice

i dpnt understand why people find these so unsightly

  21. johnb300m says:

that’s with most new technology. In the 70′s computers were an expensive joke for academics to play with. Today they run our lives. Those prices came down with numerous grants, research and economies of scale due to gradual adoption.
Just because wind power isn’t “the answer” right now, should not mean we should just give it up. That’s called halting progress.

  22. johnb300m says:

all the places I’ve seen wind farms are in agricultural farms. so there’s no trees anyway.

  23. johnb300m says:

GE used to own NBC, not CNN. And GE is working to sell NBC to Comcast.

  24. pooper4 says:

    your not smart

  25. s6u6r6f6 says:

PPD Power Co. :playtime public diversion.
a waste of time and effort employing next to nobody and generating a fraction of the power generated by ANY OTHER source you can name….a land grab by any other name is thievery.

Who am I ?

Erik

Hi, I’m Erik Astrand and the man behind this site.

My story?
I am about to be 50 and all my life I have been interested in technical things. Not sure if the special interest for the wind, and how to use the wind, started when I as a 5 year old boy and got my first sail dinghy.

Anyway, wind power and to build my own wind generator was a dream for several years. I studied many websites and also bought many courses before I finally built my own windmill. This site is about that journey and you will also find some more general articles about wind power.

Enjoy! and check out the about me page to read more.
