Do Wind Turbines Make Noise?

Are Wind Turbines Noisy? Here is some footage of Wind Turbines at Fenner Wind Farm and the sounds we are surround by everyday. You be the judge.

@ProfessorIgor a subsidized feel good project that delivers electricity at a price point similar to that of coal and less than nuclear. I agree that nuclear is a far more reliable base load source of power and that new nuclear reactors should be built but wind has proven itself to be a cheap source of energy when the turbines are put in the right places.

  2. Okay, this is pretty stupid. The darn thing is hardly moving. That’s not fair.

Some persons hate turbines because they’re noisy. Others because they’re ugly & ruin the view (tourists don’t like them). Wind turbines emit infra sound. Although they can travel long distances , pass through walls & windows with little attenuation there is no evidence for physiological effects at the levels generated. Loud music listened to with headphones can cause more damage to the ears than a field of wind turbines emitting infra sound 50 to 70 dB & well below the audible threshold.

  4. metaspherz says:

Like Federal Prisons, most persons understand the need for wind turbines and want them but NOT in their communities.

  5. metaspherz says:

Wind energy system operations do not generate air or water emissions and do not produce hazardous waste. Nor do they deplete natural resources such as coal, oil, or gas, or cause environmental damage through resource extraction and transportation, or require significant amounts of water during operation. Wind’s pollution-free electricity can help reduce the environmental damage caused by power generation in the U.S. and worldwide.

nuclear fusion is a wonderful idea. however sustaining temperatures of 10 million k for long periods of time without destroying the reactor is still technology we dont have. i prefer the vawt to these and if everyone put one on their roof, we wouldnt have such a bad pollution problem that we would get from coal, gas or nuclear fission powerstations and we’d be saving mega bucks on power.

Hope you realize that your little camcorder isn’t sensitive to the infrasound these machines produce. It’s about the same as viewing the world through rose-tinted glasses. Try laying under a UV light for 8 hours. What you can’t see can’t harm you – right? Same applies to infrasound. Dummest video that ever I saw!!

  8. meatflowers says:

    @eardoc08

are you saying being near a wind farm is going to cause major problems due to the sound? please explain…

  9. eatmelibs says:

WOW!!! I’m convinced!! You are right “videomark” they’re not noisy…..First of all, D.S., you’re filming right underneath the thing. Second, their are Plenty of reports and video’s saying otherwise.

  10. eatmelibs says:

Third…..what’s the F’n point….how much energy do they produce? Is it constant energy? Does it even come close to Fossil Fuel energy’s? Anyone with half a brain knows the answers to these questions. T. Boone Pickens promoted this shit and it came out that comparing acreage to acreage, nuclear power vs wind power, the nuclear plant 5,000 acres…..wind farm 400,000 acres……?

  11. eatmelibs says:

And it’s NOT constant power. It has to be patched into other powerlines so the power is seemless. When these worthless “low” energy producers aren’t working ie: NO WIND, oil/coal/hydro plants kick in. I say if YOU want one, BY IT YOURSELF, BY YOURSELF. I’ll stick to tried and true power and you Idiots can keep these gimmicks for yourseves. We Will Not Live without Fossil Fuels…..get over it!

  12. eatmelibs says:

(Oh….to you Greenies….Don’t even start on Pollution….have you noticed a spewing volcano lately? DAMN VOLCANO’S!!! Have fun you “Sierra Club” loving, Bushwa Fags while you help destroy this country!!

    Pointless video

  14. The video is a bit misleading. The loud sound of a turbine is BEHIND the turbine, will be about 4x the sound in front of it. But, yes, it makes a fair point. Thing is, a quiet rooftop turbine will not bother a homeowner. Have a look at my videos of quiet wind turbines at home. Thing is, the homeowner gets FREE POWER. How much Free Power does a homeowner get from a giant wind farm… None! So, how is that good for a citizen? To be enslaved by yet another source of energy?

  15. Briankey1960 says:

People always looking for something to cry and bitch about…

  16. eatmelibs says:

@Briankey1960 What is your point? Why are libs so bent on moving Off of Fossil fuels? When did this “Addiction” become so Bad? Wind…..Really??? Wind…..what a joke.

  17. @eatmelibs We will HAVE to live without fossil fuels. They will eventually run out. So we need to come up with some kind of renewable resource to replace the fossil fuels we currently use.

  18. mvlty says:

@eatmelibs I think people shouldn’t be so closed minded to think that we have to only use wind or only use fossil fuels or only use nuclear… I know that wind can’t ever be our ONLY power source. But it sure is worth giving a try!

  19. scifiguy07 says:

If your point was to convince people that wind power is quiet you should at least be fair in your comparisons. For instance the shot of the windmill is from the upwind side, most of the noise that is produced will be heard on the downwind side. Also the audio sounds of the other comparisons sound doctored and even if they weren’t the differences in what your camera picks up is not a real scientific measurement of the decibel levels.

  20. scifiguy07 says:

I have lived near wind turbines for years and personally I think they are great even though they are noisy. If your goal was to bring support for wind power then putting up biased videos will only undermine your credibility and the credibility of wind power.

  21. lolcat23 says:

@scifiguy07 the new ones are extremely silent. older ones used to have a bit of swish to them, but now a days they are extremely silent.

  22. locouk says:

Look mate, when you live next door to one of these and a hurricane blows a hoolie… They get noisy, OK!
You want to try sleeping with one of these turbines under your pillow, dammed annoying.

  23. TheScontz says:

IDOT – wind turbines don’t make noise with the wind is that low. They make lots of whooshing-noise in stronger wind.

  24. Corallibrary says:

The motors whine constantly I living under one that is less than 1000watts and it howls like mad. The difference between the noises you people are showing is that those are temporary noises and do not reverberates through your walls 24/7 everyday. It’ like a giant siren runs outside my home every damn day. Did I mention the stupid thing is 400m from my house

Who am I ?

Erik

Hi, I’m Erik Astrand and the man behind this site.

My story?
I am about to be 50 and all my life I have been interested in technical things. Not sure if the special interest for the wind, and how to use the wind, started when I as a 5 year old boy and got my first sail dinghy.

Anyway, wind power and to build my own wind generator was a dream for several years. I studied many websites and also bought many courses before I finally built my own windmill. This site is about that journey and you will also find some more general articles about wind power.

Enjoy! and check out the about me page to read more.
