A giant effort to go green… engineers are building a 100ft. tall buoy that will measure wind speed to help determine where to build offshore wind farms.
Government Center in Downtown Toledo is now operating on a new source of energy. The Ohio Building Authority, which owns Government Center, unveiled four new vertical wind turbines. The turbines are located on top of the building. The new wind turbines cost the company about 0000 to install and the payback will take about 15 years. The city is expected to save thousands of dollars in energy costs. “Currently with the 20 kilowatts that we’ll be able to produce between 000-17000 per year,” said Mark Haberman, Ohio Building authority. “So if we can double the capacity which we think we can do technologically, within the next year, year and a half, we’ll be able to save 000 per year.” The turbines have about a 30-year operating life.

The SIAG company builds about 175 million Euros worth of towers for offshore wind power plants a year. When demand for offshore plants exploded, the company didn’t want to leave the promising field to its competitors. So the steel construction company looked for a suitable site. The failing shipyard Nordseewerke in Emden seemed just right, so SIAG purchased the docks from the previous owner, ThyssenKrupp. Now it plans to build towers here to be installed later at sea. The company has already received its first commission from the wind turbine manufacturer Areva Wind in Bremerhaven.

My story? I am about to be 50 and all my life I have been interested in technical things. Not sure if the special interest for the wind, and how to use the wind, started when I as a 5 year old boy and got my first sail dinghy.
