“VAWT” “Wind Turbine” Feel “free” to use any of these “concepts” in your “windmill” designs. The wing or plate that swings on a vertical rod has been around forever and the rest are just “conceptual designs” that I came up with. An engineer proficient using AVIs stress analysis application could determine structural integrity issues using these drawings. Who knows; maybe someone will perfect this “design concept” and build them to the same height as the large HAWTs. I (think) “Vertical Axis Wind Turbines” have the leverage potential to produce more power at lower wind speeds. I am amazed by the large HAWTs and many of the modern VAWTs but I hope that engineers, innovators and last but not least, financial risk takers will continue to find ways to lower the required wind speed. Constructive comments are welcomed. If you do not have any, Yes We Can! works for me. Thanks for viewing.

Texas, a US state that first grew rich from oil, is now turning to wind-power for its next energy bonanza. The biggest windmill farm in the US has recently sprung up in the Texas town of Roscoe, which has the capability of generating power to thousands of homes. The promise of a plentiful, carbon emissions-free energy source has attracted billions of dollars to the US from international investors. Al Jazeera’s Tom Acerman reports from Roscoe, a place locals call the “Saudi Arabia of wind”. [August 4, 2010]
The overwhelming challenge of transforming our world from one of fossil carbon to one of clean power seems daunting at bestâand paralyzingly impractical at worst. Wind Energy Basics offers a solution.Wind power can realistically not only replace the lionâs share of oil-, coal-, and naturalgasâ fired electrical plants in the U.S., but also can add enough extra power capacity to allow for most of the cars in the nation to run on electricity. Gipe explains why such a startlingly straightforward solution is eminently doable and can be accomplished much sooner than previously thoughtâand will have the capacity to resuscitate small and regional economies.Wind Energy Basics offers a how-to for home-based wind applications, with advice on which wind turbines to choose and which to avoid. He guides wind-energy installers through considerations such as renewable investment strategies and gives cautionary tales of wind applications gone wrong. And for the activist, he suggests methods of prodding federal, state, and provincial governments to promote energy independence.

The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.Description: A techno-economic evaluation of small wind electric generator (SWEG) projects for providing decentralized power supply in remote locations in India is presented. SWEG projects that have either been implemented or are under implementation have been considered. The capital costs of the SWEG projects and sub-systems have been analysed. Levelised unit cost of electricity (LUCE) has been estimated for 19 select places located in different geographical regions of the country. The LUCE is found to vary in the range of Rs. 4.67-83.02/kWh (US$ 0.10-1.86/kWh) for wind electric generator projects in the capacity range 3.2-50kW with annual mean wind speed variation in the range 5-10m/s. Issues relating to their environmental impact(s), barriers to diffusion and institutional mechanism(s) to implement such projects have also been discussed.

When industrial wind turbines which are 40 stories tall are sited too close to people’s home there is trouble with noise and shadow flicker. Wind developers deny these problems exist and in the state of Wisconsin want to put them 1000 feet from houses. That’s 350 steps. This video shows what happens when wind turbines are irresponsibly sited. The nation is slowly waking up to the downside of wind energy. Developers lie to residents about the impacts these machines will have on the landowners and neighbor’s lives. They take advantage of those of us who want to do the right thing for our environment by telling us there will be no problem with noise, no problem with shadows, and no problem with putting turbines in bird migration flyways. The truth will out, eventually. For the residents in the town of Byron, Fond du Lac county, the truth is what they live with every single day. There is a place for wind energy. It’s just not beside a person’s home.
Its a wind turbine that can be assembled in under an hour, take wind from any direction, and be mounted on either a pole or your roof. Manufactured by Urban Green Energy, the leader in vertical axis wind turbines, eddys a name you can depend on to produce clean energy for you day or night, year after year.

The eddy wind turbine is specifically designed for the green home owner who wants to lower their carbon footprint while at the same time providing themselves with energy security. eddy will offset 20% of an average American home's energy usage (even more when using energy efficient appliances and lighting). Combine eddy with solar panels to offset even more energy!

Featured in Popular Science alongside GE and Google on products that they see as game changers: www.popsci.com Fast Company Magazine has this to say about the Jellyfish: www.fastcompany.com Jellyfish Wind Power Concept: What if you could plug renewable wind energy into the wall just like a blender or a toaster? Instead of using power, a wind appliance actually generates it! For more details visit: www.clariantechnologies.com Smart-Grid Enabled: With onboard Wi-Fi/WiMAX the Jellyfish is also smart-grid enabled. Today, wind and solar-powered homes are operated as autonomous points within the local electrical grid. However, they are an overlooked, yet important electrical power resource. If instead, each were harnessed collectively and tied interactively with the local utility grid as a Point-to-Grid (P2G) power generator, or even regulator, considerable economic, environmental and system reliability benefits are possible. By itself, each of these power sources is indeed small in its impact on the power system. In the aggregate, however, the economic value of P2G power is significant, more than enough to offset the initial cost of installing the required control hardware and integrating these systems with the local utility grid. Equally important, the necessary regulatory and energy distribution infrastructure, and hardware components to enable a number of different types of P2G-based systems are already in place today. The convergence of existing distributed electric power …

Our goal is to provide a tangible model for alternative energy options in Ontario. The Production of wind energy creates no air pollution and, if the turbines are sited properly, has minimal environmental impact.” says Mr. Zanchin. This is the first commercial-scale use of wind power to generate electricity in the region. The wind turbine will provide supplemental wind power to Maple Honda, and will produce approximately 110 MWH/Yr-which is the equivalent of powering 17 homes. It removes 82.5 tons of CO2 emissions/Yr and is completely Canadian made. Maple Honda will open for business in early fall 2006.

www.maglevwindturbine.com Demo CGI for proposed 2GW Magnetic Leviatated wind Turbine. *Efficient Frictionless Power Generation with less maintenance, compared to HAWT. No oil change or replacement of the bearings, gears. Since, MAGLEV does NOT require such. ** Current bearing technology has forced wind turbine designers into horizontal spindle three bladed wind turbines. In this design the huge blades are connected to a spindle in the center. The bearings that support the spindle and control the pitch of the blades (which can be hundreds of feet long) see huge pitch-moment loading, some of which is manifest as torque energy that is focused through the center spindle. The target speed for the spindle is 18 or 20 rpm and the bearings holding the spindle are mounted in a huge casting which also contains a large gearbox stepping the speed up to 1800 to 2000 RPMs which allows for the proper surface speed relationship between the coils and magnets. It is necessary to invert or condition the current, which is expensive. This gearbox is full of many large bearings, gears and castings; for a 2 MW turbine the gearbox can easily weigh 30 tons. This gearbox needs to be mounted on the top of a pole more than 150 feet in the air and be able to support the turbine blades under full-force wind conditions. ***MAGLEV Power Generation, the pitch moment ratio is closer to 1-to-1 then the 100-to-1 as with a horizontal spindle design.

With radical implications for the generation of renewable energy in the city and hence our environment as a whole, this landmark book paves the way for significant developments in low-energy design and high-rise architecture.Having outlined the fundamentals, the authors examine wind enhancement and integration techniques and address aesthetic, aerodynamic, architectural, environmental, and structural constraints. Turbulence levels are discussed in detail, design guidance is given to aid performance prediction, and a methodology is provided to assess UWECS (urban wind energy conversion systems) from economic and environmental perspectives. International case studies are included, complemented by the results from a project field-testing a two-story prototype building with an integrated wind turbine.Urban Wind Energy is suitable for researchers and students in wind energy, energy consultants, professionals in local government and urban planning, and architects and engineers with an interest in renewable energy and sustainable design.

Renewable energy systems include wind power, biomass, photovoltaics, hydropower, solar thermal, thermal ponds, and biogas. Currently, a heavy focus is on biofuels made from crops, such as corn, sugarcane, and soybeans, for use as renewable energy sources. Wood and crop residues also are being used as fuel. Though it may seem beneficial to use renewable plant materials for biofuel, the use of crop residues and other biomass for biofuels raises many concerns about major environmental problems, including food shortages and serious destruction of vital soil resources. All renewable energy systems need to be investigated because humankind has only about 40 years of oil and gas reserves remaining. There is a 50 to 100 year supply of coal resources in the ground, but coal will become increasingly difficult to extract and will greatly increase the global warming threat. Serious energy conservation and research on viable renewable energy technologies are needed. This book considers the effectiveness and economics of several renewable energy technologies of current interest, including biofuels, solar and wind.

The coming energy crisis caused by a peak in global oil and natural gas production will profoundly affect the lives of all North Americans. As the price of these vital fuels rises, homeowners will scramble to cut their fuel bills. Two options for meeting the upcoming challenge are dramatic improvements in home energy efficiency and efforts to tap into clean, affordable, renewable energy resources to heat and cool homes, to provide hot water and electricity, and even to cook. These measures can result in huge savings and a level of energy independence. The Homeownerâs Guide to Renewable Energy tells you how. It starts by outlining the likely impacts of fossil fuel shortages and some basic facts about energy. It then discusses energy conservation to slash energy bills and prepare for renewable energy options. Focusing carefully on specific strategies needed to replace specific fuels, the book then examines each practical energy option available to homeowners: ⢠Solar hot water, cooking, and water purification ⢠Space heat: passive and active solar retrofits ⢠Wood heat ⢠Passive cooling ⢠Solar electricity ⢠Wind-generated electricity ⢠Electricity from microhydropower sources ⢠Emerging technologiesâhydrogen, fuel cells, methane digesters, and biodiesel The Homeownerâs Guide to Renewable Energy gives readers sufficient knowledge to hire and communicate effectively with contractors and, for those wanting do installations themselves, it recommends more detailed manuals. With a complete resource listing, this well-illustrated and accessible guide is a perfect companion for illuminating the coming dark age. Dan Chiras has studied renewable energy and energy efficiency for three decades and has installed several renewable energy systems. He lives in a self-designed passive solar/solar electric home. An award-winning author of over 20 books, he is a sustainability design consultant who teaches courses on renewable energy, green building, and sustainability at Colorado College.

Wind power is one of the fastest growing forms of alternative energy in the world. More and more, wind power mills are seen in the countryside, in large wind farms and for the most part, away from city life. But a new form of wind power is now designed to work in an urban environment. VOA producer Zulima Palacio has the story. Mill Arcega narrates.

The technology has truly come of age, with better, more reliable machinery and a greater understanding of how and where wind power makes sense--from the independent homestead to a grid-connected utility-wide perspective. Heightened concerns about our environment mean that this resurgence of interest in wind--a natural and widespread power source--is here to stay. Wind Power is the completely revised and expanded edition of Paul Gipe's definitive 1993 book, Wind Power for Home and Business. In addition to expanded sections on gauging wind resources and siting wind turbines, this edition includes new examples and case studies of successful wind systems, international sources for new and used equipment, and hundreds of color photographs and illustrations.
