A vertical axis wind turbine design has vertical alignment of the shaft. One of the major benefits of such turbines is that there is no need for the turbine to be positioned into the wind to be efficient. These wind turbines are as a rule used on locations that witness a fluctuating wind direction. Wind energy from all positions can be utilized by vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). This picture seems not be a vertical axis construction but a nice small scale wind power system.

Vertical axis means that the gearbox and also the generator can be located close by ground as there is no need for the tower to offer it support. This also means that the gearbox and the generator are at hand when you need to maintain the wind turbines.
